IRS Penalty Abatement

A request can be made for IRS to waive IRS tax penalties and if a reasonable cause can be made that there were extenuating circumstances beyond the control of the taxpayer, there is a good chance that the request will be honored.  Penalty abatement can significantly reduce the amount owed IRS.  Examples of reasonable cause are; however not limited to:

  • You made errors or mistakes on your tax return (evidence of care and due diligence must be provided) .
  • You experienced a death, serious illness, or unexpected or unavoidable absences which resulted in an IRS tax penalty.
  • You were unable to obtain tax records necessary to complete your return.
  • Your received inaccurate advice from the IRS (written or oral).
  • Incorrect advice directly from the IRS, written or oral.
  • You experienced a casualty which resulted in the destruction of your tax records such as a fire, flood, theft or an act of God.
  • Ignorance of the Law (you must demonstrate you made a reasonable effort to learn the law though).
